Make Homemade Yogurt with Raw Milk

January 25th, 2012

Today there is a wide variety of diet plans for people who have medical conditions or for people who just want to eat more nutritious and healthy foods. One of the real food diets is the Gaps diet. The founder of the Gaps diet is Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride. She created this diet from the belief that a healthy gut with a balance of gut flora will allow your body to assimilate foods. If your body cannot digest foods properly there can be adverse affects on your health including your brain’s health. A healthy balance of gut flora can be achieved by eating probiotics found in foods like yogurt and limiting grains and foods that are high in sugar. Good gut bacterium keeps the bad bacteria under control.

For the healthiest yogurt, a yogurt that is made from raw milk that comes from a pasture raised, grass fed cow that has not been injected with hormones is the best choice. You can make this yogurt yourself by following a gaps diet recipes. You will need two quarts of raw milk and one-half cup of yogurt with live cultures. Pour the milk into a four quart crock pot. Place the lid on top, plug in the crock pot and turn it on low. Set a timer for two and a half hours. When the timer goes off, turn off the crock pot and let it sit for three hours longer while not disturbing it. After the three hours is up, mix the yogurt with two cups of the warm milk. Pour this mixture back into the crock pot and mix well. Replace the lid and wrap the crock pot with a warm blanket or several thick towels. Allow this to sit for eight hours. After eight hours or overnight, pour the yogurt into a half-gallon jar. Cover with a lid and refrigerate the yogurt.
